Purpose of Chronicity Care Africa

By 2030, chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, dementia, diabetes, and high blood pressure are expected to be the leading cause of death in many African countries. Therefore, it is more urgent than ever that African communities on the continent and in the diaspora understand just how widespread these diseases are; and learn how to prevent and manage them effectively.

To achieve this, it will require public health communication campaigns that are tailored to local contexts and which take into account cultural attitudes and social circumstances.

Our Methods

Using the experiences of communities affected by chronic conditions as well as research insights and policy evidence of academic researchers, our public health communication campaign will share practical, evidence-based advice in the form of blogs, slideshows, art exhibitions, podcasts, cartoons and animations. Readers will be able to access these resources in a variety of languages including Akan, Yoruba and Pidgin.

This website is part of the Chronicity and Care in African Contexts research project led by Professor Ama de-Graft Aikins (UCL Institute of Advanced Studies) and funded by the British Academy.
