“Men don’t cry”.
“A man must be strong, tough and brave”.
Heard these statements before? Have you thought of how statements like these affect men? This was the theme of University of Ghana PhD student, Paapa Yaw Asante’s entry in the three minute thesis (3MT) competition in June 2019.
Asante’s thesis, entitled To be a Man…Eno Easy!, explores how statements such as “Men don’t cry” affect men’s health especially in poor urban communities such as Ga Mashie, an Accra suburb.

The University of Ghana, in collaboration with the University of York, organised a 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition between the University of Ghana and the University of Nairobi in June 2019.
The 3MT competition brought together ten PhD candidates from University of Ghana and University of Nairobi to educate and engage an audience with their research in just three minutes.
The graduate researchers came from across disciplines to pitch their thesis and communicate the impact of their research to a judging panel and an audience of academics and members of the public. The top three received prizes such as research visit to University of York, UK, and cash prizes.
